Recognizing Signs of Child Abuse

6/25/2017

Child abuse prevention is one of The HAND Foundation's key focus areas, with over 3.5 million cases reported in the U.S. each year. The effects of abuse are devastating for victims and their communities, and persist long after the abuse ends. HAND grant recipient, San Francisco Child Abuse Prevention Center, shares the following signs of abuse:

    • Fear of being with a particular person
    • Changes in behavior
    • Changes in school performance and attendance
    • Self-harming behavior
    • Changes in eating and sleeping
    • Returning to earlier behaviors (like thumb-sucking or bed-wetting)
    • Unexplained injuries
    • Inappropriate sexual behavior
    • Lack of care or hygiene
