Michigan Art Gallery Gives Female Inmates a Voice

3/31/2018

Buckham Gallery, an art gallery in Flint, Michigan, does more than showcase great works of art. In 2011, it began partnering with Genesee Valley Regional Center (GVRC) to offer weekly creative workshops to the young residents of the high-security juvenile detention facility. HAND is honored to support HERSTORY: UNLOCKED, an all-female workshop series that gives these young women a voice.

In weekly 90-minute sessions, the collaborative art and women's history project introduced creative works of art by and about women. Attendees used these as inspiration to then tell their own stories, through Spoken Word Poetry, theatre, and dance. The project also incorporated their hometown of Flint - expressing its past, present, and future through the eyes of young women. Their works of art are now available in digital ebook and paperback format. LEARN MORE
