Health insurance is a profitable business, and it's not uncommon for companies to develop a charitable arm. But it is the first time we've seen a medical professional liability insurance company start a grantmaking foundation. NORCAL Group launched the NORCAL Group Foundation in September of last year. They have just made their first round of grants, with an emphasis on California's health needs.
NORCAL Group offers insurance coverage to physicians across the United States. Its foundation has awarded seven grants so far, focusing on patient care and safety, physician wellness, and targeted community efforts. For example, San Francisco Community Clinic Consortium received a grant to provide mobile clinical care to the Bay Area's homeless population.
Although based in Northern California, NORCAL Group Foundation is open to supporting health efforts in 37 states across the United States. Grant requests are reviewed twice a year, with the next application deadline rapidly approaching on April 15th. To apply, an organization must be a NORCAL Group policyholder or referred by an employee. LEARN MORE
