Friends for Gender Equality

12/10/2017

Friends of the San Francisco Commission on the Status of Women (Friends) raises funding and awareness of the initiatives of the San Francisco Commission and Department on the Status of Women around three key policy areas: stopping violence against women, eliminating human trafficking, and promoting gender equality. HAND has supported Friends for many years and highlights some of their current efforts to serve women and girls in the Bay Area:

    • 100 Girls Who One Day Will Influence the World: a mentorship and outreach program for young women and girls interested in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics (STEAM). Includes the Girls Services Directory, a database of girl-serving programs and resources in the Bay Area.
    • Closing the Gender Wage Gap with Free Salary Negotiation Workshops: together with American Association of University Women (AAUW), Friends will offer free salary negotiation workshops to 20,000 women by 2020. These workshops are available to all women, at any age and stage in their career, to support financial literacy and independence.
    • Gender Equality Principle (GEP): an innovative program that helps companies build more egalitarian and productive working environments. Companies begin by taking a self-assessment tool to determine their baseline on gender equality, then Friends helps them develop an action plan to strengthen areas of weakness.
